The Four Seasons enjoys a somewhat regal rank among New York Restaurants. It is something more than a fine eatery, it is something of landmark, one of those special places which lend the city its distinct and enviable character. Perhaps it is the culinary equivalent of the Empire State Building or Central Park. The gilded opulence of the interior is legendary, as are the famed artists whose work adorns the dining rooms, bar and walls. As testament to both its heritage and the artistic vision of the architects who designed it, diners today will find it almost the same as those who first ate there in 1959.
Far from resting on its laurels, this iconic New York Restaurant continues to offer both style, elegance and fine food to some of the city’s most discerning individuals. The Grill Room is perhaps as famous as the Pablo Picasso tapestry which once divided it from the Pool Room, in much the same way that he legendary lunches in the Grill Room are as well known for the food as they are for the influential and celebrated souls who can be found enjoying them. More than any culinary venue in the world, the Grill Room is part of history.
Those who find themselves salivating over the crisp-skinned duck, while ensconced in the rich opulence, can take additional pleasure in the knowledge that the very same room has hosted such occasions as a recent Grammy Awards celebration and JFK’s 45th birthday party. While no less luxurious, the Pool Room provides a more palatial environ, replete with pleasing white marble pool in the centre and a pervasive feeling of sophistication and grandeur. The Bar is equally renowned, especially for its polished beauty and the light catching sculpture of rods which hangs from the ceiling.
The delights of both main menus and the Bar menu, which offers a suitably stripped-down selection of lighter meals, are in the capable hands of resident culinary genius Chef Christian Albin. These award-winning menus are all about taking the finest seasonal produce to create a contemporary American cuisine, incorporating touches and nuances from French haute cuisine as well as a flavor or two from the other great food nations of the world. It is from the seasonal ingredients and the changing menus, spring through winter, that the eatery takes its name.
Naturally for such a distinguished New York Restaurant, the wine cellar is one of the city's most exalted, offering a considered choice of classical wines, as well as a few exemplary bottles from Italy's best vineyards. As far as New York Restaurants go, this is the one in which you're likely to find a bottle of Chateau Cheval Blanc being cradled by the sommelier and opened with a flourish.
Unsurprisingly for a New York Restaurant which has been delighting the palates of some of the world's most renowned figures for nearly five decades, The Four Seasons is the venue of choice for a grand occasion. To this end, the Pool Room Terrace is a dedicated space of similarly sumptuous splendor reserved for special events. The Terrace is the measure of exclusivity for anything from a cocktail party to a banquet. The two Private Dining Rooms, situated just above the Grill Room, offer a more intimate venue for those who require seclusion and haven't the need of the Terrace's expanse.
The Four Seasons is more than just one of the finest New York Restaurants, every meal brings with it a sense of history and magic. Whether sipping a fine brandy at the bar, scrutinizing the wine list in the Pool Room or ordering your usual in the Grill Room, a visit to The Four Seasons has no substitute.
