Located at the prestigious address of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, BLT Market was the next logical step for renowned chef Laurent Tourondel. Having already achieved considerable recognition for his culinary efforts at his first eatery, Cello, which closed down, he went on to open the first of his BLT eateries. Although the acronym might suggest a sandwich of bacon, lettuce and tomato, it rather stands for Bistro Laurent Tourondel.
The first of his concept BLT eateries to open was BLT Steak in 2004, a clever revision of a typical American steak house. Receiving numerous accolades and a whole lot of praise from the New York Restaurant cognoscenti, it wasn't long before he treated fish and burgers to the same touch of creative culinary reinvention.
While the Fish, Burger and Prime BLT bistros have somewhat swept the city and lifted Laurent up to a chef of near mythical stature in almost no time at all, it is BLT Market which is destined to set the standard for any place which attempts the impossible task of following in his footsteps.
As the name suggests, BLT Market is a New York Restaurant which is all about the freshest, locally sourced ingredients from the best markets. The menu changes monthly to makes full use of seasonal produce and allow the kitchen to flex it considerable talents. The weekly specials board offers dishes and delights created just as the produce comes into season. As a bistro, there is more than a touch of Gallic flare about the food, although it doesn't limit itself to trying to create the specific, but rather takes a dash from here and there, from whichever culinary touch will get the most out of the magical ingredients. Ingredients which are in themselves part of what makes a meal at this marvelous New York Restaurant so special.
The wine list is suitably impressive, offering carefully selected bottles from a range of French and New World vineyards, although the emphasis is really on French vineyards. Of course, there are some splendid Champagnes to sip and even a bottle or two of seasonal beer, the ideal accompaniment to one of the more robust dishes.
Although the changeable menu is part of the appeal, you can expect to find a healthy selection of pastas, risottos and other styles of dish. The worthy seasonal and market produce is perhaps one of the reasons the kitchen seems so unfailingly inspired to create each dish to perfection, every time. Wearing its market and country credentials like a badge of honor, the elegant interior speaks of a tasteful rustic charm suitably interpreted to appease the sophisticated urbanites who find themselves returning time and again to a New York Restaurant which manages the impressive task of quashing any doubts that it is simply a hotel eatery. The walls are adorned with original artwork, boldly and vibrantly celebrating all the hues and shapes of fresh fruit and vegetables. A few rustic farm tools add to the countryside appeal, an appeal which can be safely engaged from the enticing velvet and leather banquettes which lend a luxurious contrast.
Proudly touting its relationship with purveyors of great produce, you're likely to be able to take little bit of what you fancy home with you, since there are some tasty offerings available for purchase. Whether you're having a brunch before a gentle amble though Central Park or have geared yourself for a dinner of heavenly proportions, BLT Market is one of those rare New York Restaurants which surpasses all expectations and delivers the sublime every time.
